Chamber music is at the centre of the practical pathway of all students studying instruments and singing at the Haute école de musique de Genève (HEM).
For the duration of their studies, whether at Bachelor level or Master’s level, the students have occasion to discover repertoires ranging from ancient music to modern-day works, in formations ranging from trio with piano to string quartet, via various wind and brass quintets, and going right up to the most original mixed ensembles that are around today.
Chamber music enables multiple skills to be developed, on both the musical and relational fronts. It also provides fertile ground for the first collaborations that could later lead to lasting partnerships. Very often, the artistic and human encounters that occur in the context of chamber music at the HEM take place outside the school, and take on a professional dimension.
In order to support this transition and serve as a springboard for ensembles wanting to get established, the HEM offers numerous opportunities to perform in public, whether in the institutional setting or outside it.
Specialist training is also offered by the HEM to ready-formed ensembles wishing to hone their skills and launch themselves into a professional career. The teaching varies depending on the type of ensemble. Moreover, the students can also benefit from the advice of the ensemble invited to take up a residency by the HEM.
